Airsoft Saw

For those of you that don’t know, the “SAW” in Airsoft SAW stands for Squad Automatic Weapon. Just wanted to get that out of the way up front. It’s also known as the airsoft M249, but I’ve found that a majority of players and chairsofters out there refer to the gun more often as a SAW, rather than the 249. So I don’t know. Call it what you want. I don’t care. I’ll go back and forth between references, just to keep you on your toes. Anyway, I’m rambling already and that’s a problem. Basically the M249 or SAW is a light support weapon. Now, in the event you did NOT read the prior page on light machine guns, the “light” does not apply to weight. It refers to the caliber of ammunition used in the real steel version. As a general rule, “light” weapons use 5.56mm rounds while “heavy” weapons use 7.62mm and above. See the Heavy Machine Gun Page for more details on this.

Speaking of hardcore/bad a$$/win/etc.
I couldn’t build this page and not include THIS little gem:
A fairly well-known video of a U.S. Army Soldier firing dual M249s simultaneously.

Let’s talk about airsoft tactics as they relate to a support weapon. Contrary to what you might think, the main purpose of a saw gunner is not necessarily to get all the actual kills in game. Although no one is going to complain if he does. His mission is to assist the assault riflemen and their ability to to advance on the enemy’s position so THEY can take them out. Basically, the saw gunner squeezes down on the trigger and holds it, spraying the general area of the OPFOR, so that they are forced to keep their heads down and stay behind cover. Consequently, this limits the OPFOR’s ability to visually monitor the advancing force’s movement and helps minimize return fire which creates an obvious risk to the saw gunner and his squad. This is a tried and true effective tactic. All you really need, as far as airsoft tactics are concerned, is you and at least one other person. One of you operates the SAW, and the other runs an assault weapon, or even an airsoft gas pistol would work. Try it out sometime. Movement is key in the process of over-taking your enemies position. Leaving the “camping” tactics to the noobz. If you’re looking to elevate your level of play, this is one way to do that.

In order for this site to be a true reflection of me, I’ll need to include the variations on the airsoft saw. There isn’t just one type of M249. So here’s some visual stimulation to help illustrate the differences between the various airsoft SAWs.

See the differences? I knew you would. Well done.

So now you might ask, “Who makes the best M249?” Well, I don’t know. I’ve only used the Classic Army model and am very satisfied. Of course, I had it tuned by a tech at Spartan Imports to shoot darts. A lot of darts. In a very short amount of time. But if you’d like an unbiased approach and the ability to form your own opinion, you can either buy all the airsoft SAWs on the market and test them yourself, or you can just check out this site:

Click on the “Type” Column and “Sort Descending.”
This will group all the LMGs together.

So you can check out the various reviews on each of the airsoft SAWs listed and see what others with first-hand knowledge & experience have to say about the other brands. I know guys that have the A&K and like it, but I also know that they had to do a bunch of special mods to get it shooting well. Personally, I’m not really into that, so the cost savings between the A&K models and the CA models didn’t seem worth it to me. Aside from that, I feel much more confident with a CA, knowing most after-market upgrade parts available will probably fit the gearbox. I am particular about the brand of parts I use, so I don’t like to be limited in my options by the gun I’m modding. But, I’ve heard some people swear by the Top and Star brand models as well. So I don’t know. It really comes down to what YOU like the best. Because after all, you’re the one who has to run around the field and depend on it to operate properly while you’re trying to hunt down your opponents.
